HIKE
Pacific City is a perfect basecamp to explore the magnificent nearby trails. With options for all levels of difficulty, you can fill your days wandering through forested trails with scenic lookout points and hidden pathways that meander along flowing rivers. No trip to Pacific City is complete without climbing the Great Dune at Cape Kiwanda and taking in the magnificent coastline views to the north and south. Trails around Pacific City include Bob Straub State Park, featuring river and ocean hikes along sandy paths; Sitka Sedge State Natural Area, where you’ll see tidal flats, saltwater marshes, abundant marsh wildlife and expansive beach views; or the Pacific City Pathways, where you can wind your way through an old-growth forest for a spectacular view of Haystack Rock.
PADDLE
Pacific City is a paddling playground for kayakers and paddle boarders of all levels. Nearby Netarts Bay and Nestucca River are perfect places for both. Bring your kayaks or standup paddleboards and explore where the Nestucca River meets the ocean or paddle east through the Nestucca Valley. Keep your eyes to the sky while you paddle and spot pelicans, eagles, white-cheeked, and the snowy plover in their expansive natural habitats during specific times of the year. Rentals for a day on the river are also available through Nestucca Adventures. The team offers a wide range of rentals, including paddle kayaks, standup paddleboards, and Hobie kayaks with mirage drive.
WANDER
There are miles of pristine coastline to explore that expands north and south of Pacific City, but the most popular beach to enjoy is Cape Kiwanda State Park—the heart and soul of Pacific City. Here you'll find a sandstone headland that juts out into the ocean and creates a haven for surfers and dory boats, along with stunning tide pools featuring colorful starfish, barnacles, and sea creatures to explore at low tides. Climb the towering 240 ft dune at the cape's base and take in the endless views north and south. Check out the spectacular view of Pacific City’s Haystack Rock from atop the dune—this monolith is considered the fourth largest monolith in the world at 235-feet tall. For an special treat, make plans to visit Pacific City for whale watching during the twice-yearly gray whales migration. While you are at the beach, visit the iconic Pelican Brewing Company's first brewpub to watch the action at Cape Kiwanda State Park with your toes in the sand and an award-winning beer in hand.
